Thursday, March 17, 2011 from 3:30 to 5:30PM - 2 Hour Hands-On - W2-67

Facilitated by Ron Houtman, Educational Technologist, Kent ISD

Description:
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to improve communication and document student achievement through the use of free cloud-based applications like Jing and learn how to integrate those into their blog, wiki, Moodle, or Blackboard course. You will learn how to create interactive learning experiences that can be shared locally or through the Internet.

Overview:

Tired of repeating yourself? How do help kids get vital learning when they don’t get it the first time, or are absent?

Screencasting is an excellent way to create quick little demonstrations out to colleagues and students, and to have them respond back in the same way.  It's pretty easy to send the link to the screencast via email - however, the power of these learning objects are that you can embed them into existing websites, such as a wiki, blog, YouTube, TeacherTube, SchoolTube or a collaborative website.

Who are you?

Please take a moment to fill out this quick form so I know the audience and can tailor this presentation to your learning needs.

Tools:

Jing Project - Free for the basic version. $15 per year for the “Pro” version. Produces quick-and-easy but unpolished screenshots, videos and audio tracks ready for publishing. Works on Windows or Mac OS.  Allows you to store, share and manage screencasts from the 'mothersite' - Screencast.com.      In addition to Jing - take a look at SnagIt and Camtasia Studio from TechSmith.   You can create more polished screencasts and screenshots from each.

Headset/Microphone:

Get something comfortable - look for the words USB and circumaural for best results.

Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset (Black)

Or a desktop mic to capture you doing a lesson or demonstration - like the Logitech USB Desktop Microphone

Webcam:

You can use a webcam to add video to your Jing! screencast when you upgrade to Jing Pro for $14.95/yr

The multifunction web/document camera I use is an IPEVO Point 2 View USB Camera and is $69.00.

How about some examples?

How the Flipped Classroom Is Radically Transforming Learning

Heather Robotham from Wyoming PS - Flipping her classroom - and another

Kahn Academy - Probably the largest repository of academic screencasts on earth

Mathedemics YouTube Channel - Dedicated math channel on YouTube

Flipping Your Classroom Page

Salman Kahn, Transformer at Connected Principals

Utilities to make your screencasting easier

Sizer - by Brian Apps - (W) - resizes your screen to capture fixed sized windows

MPEG Stream Clip (W/M) - Convert and download many types of video

VLC Media Player (W/M) - Plays just about any video format

Audacity (W/M) - for recording audio

Media Info - Helps you figure out video formats/CODECs

Handbrake (M) - for transcoding

Advanced uploading to YouTube - Instructions on size, quality and CODEC setting for optimum quality on the *Tube sites.

How do I keep learning?

Jing! Tutorials

Here are a few other web app screencasting applications just in case:

ScreenJelly - Free.  Uses a Java applet to record your screen and share it with others.  Like Jing! great for making short screencasts.

ScreenToaster - Free. Uses Java to capture and output as a MOV or SWF file

Screencast-o-matic - and Show Me What's Wrong. - Same thing as above.

Screenr - Free for the basic version.  Something interesting about Screenr is the integration with Twitter.  You can create a shot screencast and publish the link as a 'tweet'.

With each of the applications comes some limitations: You only get 5 minutes of recording time per screencast. With some applications, you can’t edit the screencast, except for pausing while you go. Finally, some are deployed as a Java-based applet, there is that possibly scary moment (mostly for the uninitiated... ) when you need to grant it permission to access your machine.

Other Applications:

CamStudio - (W, Free) - Captures and save screencasts as AVI or SWF files.
